July 7, 1931, the daughter of the late Simon Miller Arnold and Eva Nicholson Arnold. She graduated from Glenville High School, Glenville State College, and West Virginia University. She is survived by her husband, David William Smith; daughter, Peggy Sue Plum; grandchildren, Shannon, Adam, and Matt; brother, Robert D. Arnold, Glenville. She was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Arnold Deal. She resided in Blacksburg with her husband, David William Smith, and granddaughter, Shannon M. Plum. She retired from Glenville State College in 1984, after a lifetime of teaching in public education. Jean will be remembered for her many kindnesses and her dedication to children. Family visitation will be held at the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, Fellowship Hall, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 18, 1995. A visitation will also be held on November 19, 1995 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Ellyson Mortuary in Glenville, W.Va. Graveside services will be conducted Monday, November 20, 1995, at Stalnaker Cemetery, Glenville, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Humane Society or the Jean Adams-Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund to be established at Glenville State College. | 5 | C. Woodrow "Woody" Groves, age 74, of Camden, died Saturday, February 13, 2010, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following an extended illness. He was born February 19, 1935, in Gilmer County, the son of the late Dale W. Groves and Madeline Burke Groves. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Cathy Groves. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Phyllis C. Rohrbough Groves; two daughters, Kimberly Rush of Weston, and Jeanne Pierce and husband Davy of Buckhannon; two sons, Donald Groves of Camden and Ronald Groves and wife Kristal of Good Hope; six grandchildren, Danny Groves, Dusty Lambert, Derrik Rush, Joseph Legenza, Christopher Groves and Casey Groves; four great-grandchildren, Danner Groves, Jaelyn Roop, Caiden Groves and Madeline Legenza; one step-great-grandchild, Kasey Davis; and one sister, Doris Foster and husband Bud of Glenville. Woodrow worked for Consolidated Natural Gas for over 35 years before retiring in 1991. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #118 of Gilmer County, Scottish Rite of Wheeling, Nemesis Shrine of Parkersburg and the Lewis County Shrine. He was Methodist by faith. He loved to care for his farm, spending time with his cattle and riding his tractor. Friends were received Monday, February 15, at Boyle Funeral Home, Weston. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, at the Boyle Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bill Hunt officiating. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Weston. | 42 | Donald E. Barker, 85, of Glenville passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital of Weston following a brief illness. He was born in Glenville on May 7, 1926: son of the late Charles Barker and Rebecca (Marks) Barker. On April 2, 1947, he married his beloved and devoted wife, Mary Jean (Ralston), who survives. Mr. Barker began his career as parts manager at Ford Motor in Charleston. He later worked at Ford Motor and Kinney Shoe Corporation both of Glenville. Donald was an active member of the Glenville Presbyterian Church, where he served as bookkeeper, Deacon, and Elder. Mr. Barker was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served during World War II. Family and friends will be received at the Glenville Presbyterian Church of Glenville on Saturday, January 7, 2012 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday 11 a.m. from the Glenville Presbyterian Church with Reverend Kenny Fisher officiating. | 44 | Ebbie Evans Burk GLENVILLE -- Ebbie Evans Burk, 98, of Sutton, died at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at Nicholas County Health Care Nursing Home, Richwood, following a brief illness. She was born Sept. 11, 1902, in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Hugh and Mary Fincham Evans. Her husband, Lester Doyle Burk, whom she married Sept. 26, 1922, preceded her in death on June 12, 1981. Surviving are three grandchildren, Barbara Jean Burk Behanna, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Robert Scott Burk, Kenashia, Wis., and Jacquelyne Fredrick, Highland, N.Y.; and two great-grandchildren, Jack Fredrick and Ryan Burk. She was also preceded in death by one son, Jack L. Burk on June 10, 1989. Mrs. Burk was a homemaker. She was a member of the Burk United Methodist Church. Friends may call at 1 p.m. Monday at the Ellyson Mortuary, Glenville. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Ron McCord officiating. | 45 | Ernest Lee Arbuckle, 82, of Haines City, died May 13, 2008. He was born July 12, 1925, in Glenville, West Virginia, and was the only child of James Erie Arbuckle and Lorena Lee Fries Arbuckle. He graduated from Glenville High School in 1942. He enrolled at Glenville State College and completed two semesters before volunteering for service with the United States Army Air Corps. He earned his wings and was commissioned a a Second Lieutenant at Hondo Air Force Base in Texas. He served with the Fifteenth (Strategic) Army Air Force, 460 Bombardment Group (Heavy), nicknamed the Black Panther, 761st Bomb Squadron in the Mediterranean Theatre. His unit attacked key targets throughout Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Austria, Romania, Yugoslavia and Greece. From an American airbase located at Spinazzola, Italy, he flew fifteen combat missions as a navigator aboard B-24 Liberator bombers. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged from active military service in 1945 with the rank of First Lieutenant. He held a bachelor's degree in history from West Virginia University, and earned a master's degree in European history from the same institution. In 1950, he graduated from Harvard Business School with the M.B.A degree and ranked third in his class. He then returned to Glenville where he was employed by Kanawha Union Bank as its chief financial officer. He was also elected to a seat on the Bank's board of directors which he held until 1966. That year, he resigned his position and board seat at the Bank to pursue other business interests. In 1977, he was re-elected to the Bank's board of directors. Shortly after West Virginia law was changed in 1982 to permit the creation of bank holding companies, he played the pivotal role in forming Heritage Bancorp, Inc. Both Kanawha Union Bank and The Weston National Bank were acquired by Heritage. He served as a member of the Heritage Board of Directors until 1988, when the company merged with United Bankshares, Inc., of Parkersburg, West Virginia. He was a past member of the Glenville Rotary Club. He was a member of Gilmer County Lodge No. 118, AF&AM, Valley of Parkersburg, Orient of West Virginia, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, S,J., US.A., and the Nemises Shrine Temple of Parkersburg. He was a former member, deacon and trustee of the Glenville Presbyterian Church. He was a member and former vestryman of St. Mark's Episcopal Church of Haines City. He endowed the Ernest L. Arbuckle Chair at Harvard Business School. In 1996, he sailed to France aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2. along with several hundred other World War II veterans, and attended the ceremonies that commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the Normandy Invasion. He married Edwina Blackwood Cowan on August 31, 1974. She died Jan. 23, 1983. He married Norma Lee Neitzel Cardin on Oct. 5, 1985. She survives. He was also survived by three stepchildren and two first cousins once removed. On Wednesday, May 21, at 1 p.m., memorial services will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Haines City. They made their first jump into Normandy in the early morning hours of D-Day, June 6, 1944. In July of '44 the Regiment returned from Normandy and began to re-fit and train for the next operation. After several false starts the 501st PIR, along with the entire 101st Airborne, was alerted for Operation Market Garden Holland on September 17, 1944. On 17 September 1944 Operation Market Garden, Montgomery's ambitious plan to perform an end run around the retreating German Army, began with the largest Airborne operation in history.
